REGISTERED BUILDERS NORTH SHORE - OUR STORY

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

BUILDERS ARE NOT MADE, THEY ARE BORN. From the day I was able, I was trying to construct things. I began with wooden blocks then progressed to Lego, followed by a hammer, nails and wood. It wasn’t unusual to find me helping my father Gary build things around the house, or quietly supervising the extension being done to our bungalow, at the tender age of 4. Gary was one of the Registered Builders North Shore.
As the years progressed, the curiosity and the passion for building only grew. Having explored what university and the work force had to offer me, I realised I couldn’t deny my heart’s desire to work in the construction industry.

STARTING OUT

When I set out to find a building apprenticeship times were tough and opportunities were scarce. Despite this, I was accepted into a labour company’s apprenticeship scheme. From there I had to serve out a trial period, at first labouring, to prove I was going to uphold their name and honour their financial commitment to me.
After labouring, I began my apprenticeship with Wayne Jensen at SCD Builders. Here I was placed in the care of 3 builders, who between them had over 80 years experience in the industry – I couldn’t have asked for better people to learn from. Each offered different areas of expertise and I soaked up their knowledge like a sponge.
With Wayne and the team, I worked on commercial office units and renovations. I also assisted the team on building a number of new houses – a highlight being a country estate for one of our country’s wealthiest people.

THE NEXT PART

The building industry continued to slow, so I decided it was in my best interests to leave SCD Builders and further my career with Will from William Ryder Contracting. Will took my learning to new heights with his meticulous attention to detail. I served out the remainder of my apprenticeship with him and went on to become one of his leading hands, managing a team of builders on a number of projects. Whilst working with Will I worked on large scale re-clads of leaky buildings along with both minor and major renovations.
After working for Will for five and a half years, I left to further develop my skills, working for Bridgens and Thomson. I remained with them until beginning my own company, at the end of 2014.
The road to becoming a builder hasn’t always been a walk in the park, but often the road to the best things in life aren’t. As a result, I have determination in ‘spades’ and will work through any challenges to achieve my goals.

SO WHO IS TIM CAIN
WHEN HE’S NOT WORKING?

I’ve always been a fitness freak and love being outdoors. Needless to say, going to the gym to stay fit has been a big priority in my life. You’ll regularly find me sweating it out at the gym, losing all those unnecessary (but delicious) carbs.   Being Kiwi born, I played rugby union from when I was a boy up until just a few years ago – a total of 22 seasons. Now I prefer watching rugby and league on TV (and waking up without a sore body on Sundays).   On my days off you’d most likely most likely find me at the beach, out for a walk with my beautiful wife Steph, running around a touch field or having a cold beer with mates after a friendly round of golf or tennis.
